I FALL TO PIECES
Cordelia complains to Doyle about their lack of funds. Doyle points out that Angel is more interested in helping clients than charging them. When Angel arrives he tells them he’s not comfortable asking for money. Doyle has a vision about a woman called Melissa Burns who is at work when she receives flowers; the card is signed by someone names Ronald. Upset, Melissa steps into the restroom, where she swallows some tranquillisers. Leaving work, Melissa is approached by Angel. He explains that he aids people when the police can’t. She thanks him but drives away.
Back at the office, Angel asks Cordelia and Doyle if he could be scaring clients away. He suggests that Cordy talk with Melissa. Cordelia agrees but not until she’s a paying client. Doyle reminds them their work isn’t all about money.
Melissa has stopped at an ATM machine, but her card won’t work. Ronald appears and explains that he changed her PIN number to the date they first met. He asks her about the tranquillisers she took earlier in the day. Melissa warns him to leave her alone, but Ronald reminds her that they’re in love. Melissa calls Angel Investigations. She tells Angel, Doyle and Cordelia about Ronald Meltzer, a neurosurgeon she dated once and who is now staling her. She says that Ronald can somehow see her, even when she’s alone. Melissa is preparing for bed while Ronald sits in his office minus one eye. The detached eye is watching her as she undresses.
Angel visits Kate Lockley and tells her about his client and her stalker. Kate pulls the file on Melissa and Meltzer. His lawyers, Wolfram & Hart, filed a retraining order against Her. Angel express his concern and Kate assigns a policeman to watch her building. Angel visits Meltzer’s office where he discovers a book with a personal inscription from the author, Vinpur Narpudan. Ronald catches Angel, who introduces himself under an alias, claiming his wife has a tumour and that she’ll die without an immediate operation. Angel makes it clear he’ll pay whatever is necessary. Angel confesses to Cordelia that he knows how Meltzer thinks but can’t fathom how he’s able to see Melissa. Angel researches Vinpur Narpudan, e-mails him asking for help and they meet.
Outside Melissa’s apartment while she sleeps, Ronald stands in the bushes. A policeman spots him and tells him to put his hands up. Ronald raises his arms but his hands are missing. They are crawling into Melissa’s bed and she screams. The policeman rushes to her aid. Melissa lets him in and the detached hand strangles him. Kate questions Angel about how Meltzer killed the officer. He doesn’t show up on the security cameras. Angel assures her that Meltzer is the killer and that his fingerprints will reveal all.
Doyle asks Angel how they’re going to deal with Meltzer. Angel explains Meltzer’s detached parts can’t reattach if deprived of blood and oxygen. Doyle seals up all possible entry points in an effort to keep Meltzer from gaining access to Melissa. Using his alias, Angel goes to see Meltzer in his office. Meltzer incapacitates Angel with a paralytic drug. Doyle is still sealing ever way into Angel’s home while Melissa gets some sleep. One of Meltzer’s hands pushes its way through a sealed vent, while one of eyes watches Doyle and Cordelia. They hear the scraping noise and Doyle investigates. He sees fingers coming up through the grille in the floor. But it’s a diversion to allow Meltzer entry. Meltzer grabs Cordelia and shoves her into a closet while Doyle is pushed into a storage shaft.
Melissa tries to escape but Meltzer blocks her way. Angel bursts in and goes for Meltzer whose teeth fly from his mouth and bite Angel’s arm. Angel and Meltzer fight and Angel pins Meltzer’s hand to the floor with a scalpel before knocking his head off with a baseball bat, killing him. Angel assures Melissa that Meltzer is dead. The next day, Cordelia asks Angel about Meltzer. He assures her that the parts are buried in concrete. Melissa thanks then and Angel, embarrassed, reminds her of the bill which she happily pays.
