PARTING GIFTS

Angel returns to the Oracles to ask that they fold time again and bring Doyle back.   They remind Angel that Doyle died so Angel could continue to save others.   Angel tells them he’s blind without Doyle’s visions.   The Oracles state, ‘For every door that closes, another opens.  ’ A frightened demon runs down an alley, hotly pursued by a leather-clad motorcyclist.   Missing Doyle, Cordelia is looking for something he left behind in the office.   Angel tells her to take the day off, but she chides him for trying to push her away.   She tells him that she’s not going anywhere.   The alarm on her watch suddenly goes off and she remembers that she has an audition.   Rushing out, she nearly collides with the pursued Barney, an empathy demon.   He says that he has heard about Angel and asks for help.   Barney asks, as it’s the middle of the afternoon why Angel is not in his coffin.   Angel is appalled by such stereotypical piffle.   Barney tells Angel his pursuer is unshakable.

Cordelia’s audition goes terribly, due to a sudden vision she experiences.   She returns to the office and kisses Angel.   Realising that neither of them experienced anything from the exchange, Cordy reveals that when she and Doyle kissed, he must have passed his ability to receive visions from The Powers That Be.   Angel asks what she saw in her vision but Cordelia’s description is vague.   She kisses Barney to see if she can pass him the gift, but again she unsuccessful.

Angel asks Cordelia to stay with their client while he checks out Barney’s apartment.   As Angel suspected, the motorcycle is parked outside Barney’s lodgings.   Angel discovers demon blood on the apartment door.   Silhouetted in the doorway is Wesley Wyndam-Pryce aiming a crossbow at Angel.   Angel bats the crossbow from Wesley’s grasp and asks about the Council. Wesley explains he no longer works with them.   He is now a rogue demon hunter, on the trail of a creature who has left a trail of mutilated bodies. Angel asks if the demon is Barney.   Wesley describes a large and powerful creature.   Angel notices fluid dripping on to Wesley’s jacket.   The demon drops down on to them and they fight before the demon escapes out the window.

Cordelia tries to draw a shape she saw in her vision.   She can make no sense of it.   Barney draws her into conversation, telling her that he senses the pain she’s feeling regarding Doyle’s loss as Angel and Wesley return.   Cordelia kisses Wesley, still trying to pass off Doyle’s gift.   A started Wesley allows Angel to tell Barney that Wesley wasn’t hunting him.   He was actually after the Kungai demon who was intent on stealing Barney’s empathic abilities.   Wesley provides a description of the demon from one of Angel’s books.   This reveals that the demon is of Asian origin.   Angel decides he should begin his hunt in Koreatown.   Wesley insists on accompanying him.

Cordelia is still struggling with her drawing.   Barney asks if he can help and Cordelia tells him of her unwanted new ability.   Barney tells her that Doyle left her his most valuable possession.   She fixes Barney a cup of coffee, while he makes a call to his associate, Hank.   He admits he has acquired the Kungai horn, but he thinks he’s found something better, a girl with seer eyes.   He tells Cordelia that she’s a terrible actress, but that he is a good actor.

Angel finds the dying Kungai demon in a massage parlour.   The demon has a large wound in his forehead. The demon tries to speak to Angel, who is frustrated that he doesn’t understand the language. Wesley tells Angel that he has knowledge of the dialect.   Angel points out that the demon is dying, not from the arrow wound Wesley inflicted, but from the removal of his Tak horn.   Wesley struggles with the translation but the demon dies.   Angel pieces several clues together and realises that he was describing Barney.

Cordelia finds herself gagged and bound.   Barney and Hank argue over the value of Cordy’s eyes.   Wesley blames himself for Cordelia’s abduction as he laments that he is a fraud and the Council was right to sack him.   Angel discovers Cordy’s discarded sketches.   He recognises the shape as a famous sculpture.   He tells the self-flagellating Wesley that to find Cordy they must find the sculpture.   After researching, they find the sculpture was purchased by a hotel.   Wesley remembers the translation of a word the Kungai demon was repeating: ‘ Auction’.

Barney points out that Cordelia is a rare find.   He is about to drop the gavel on Cordelia, finalising her sale.   In a desperate attempt to buy time, Cordelia goads the bidders that she’s worth more than they’re paying for her.   After the auction, the layer tells Barney that her employers are only interested in the eyes.   Barney is about to extract Cordelia’s eyes when Angel and Wesley arrive.   While Angel battles Hank and Barney, Wesley struggles to free Cordelia who stabs Barney with the Kungai horn.

Sitting at Angel’s kitchen table, Cordelia frames her drawing while Angel cooks breakfast.   She tells Angel the drawing is a reminder that something of Doyle’s is still with them.   Wesley packs his bag.   He says goodbye, but he stays long enough to accept Angel’s breakfast invitation.
