SENSE AND SENSITIVITY
Kate arrests a man name Spivey and spends hours interrogating him. County Supervisor Caffrey has been murdered and Kate is convinced Spivey knows where suspected killer Tony Papazian is hiding. Spivey and Kate come to blows and her fellow detectives pull her from the room. Angel is in the sewer, battling a two-headed demon with tentacles. Cordelia and Doyle arrive, providing Angel with a sword to slay the creature. Angel instructs his colleagues to cut off its heads and limbs, ensuring it doesn’t come back to life ‘again’. Indignant, Cordy berates him over his insensitivity. The duo return to the office, covered in slim, Angel begins to tell Cordelia something, but she says that she doesn’t want to hear anything until he enquires about the completion of their task. The discussion is interrupted as Kate arrives and shows Angel photographs of Tony Papazian, explaining her sources have dried up. Angel offers to help but Kate cautions him, she only wants him to locate Tony.
Back at the precinct, Kate sees her father, who is about to retire from the force. Their conversation is strained and awkward. Kate is called to the phone. Angel says he has located Tony at San Pedro pier. Realising that Tony may escape by boat before Kate arrives, Angel dons a tourist disguise and joins Tony and his henchmen. Annoyed by Angel’s presence, Tony orders his man to get rid of Angel and a fight ensues. Kate arrives in time to arrest Tony, but she chastises Angel, pointing out that he could have been hurt. Tony makes a phone call to his lawyers, Wolfram & Hart. He tells them that Kate is the thorn in his side and he wants her removed, permanently. Papazian’s lawyer, Lee Mercer, threatens to charge the police with brutality.
Cordelia tells Angel that it’s nice to have a simple case for a change, but he expresses his concern that it may not be over. Doyle confirms Angel’s suspicions. Johnny Red told Doyle that Papazian is planning something. Kate goes to a bar where fellow officers congratulate her on the arrest. She sits with her father who says that Papazian could get off on a technicality. Kate is shown a memo that orders all personnel to attend a sensitivity course due to her handling of the Papazian case. The next day, Kate and her colleagues are in class, listening to Allen Lloyd. Allen hands one officer a wooden staff, which he calls the talking stick. Whoever holds the stick is give the freedom to express their true feelings, without judgement from his peers. Allen hands Kate the stick, telling her he knows she’s been hurt.
Angel and Doyle question Johnny about Papazian who, he says, is out to get Kate. Angel goes to warn her where she apologises to him about the previous night, then asks him to accompany her to a retirement party. Lee Mercer visits Lloyd’s home and enquires about the sessions. Lloyd reassures him that by the following day he should see results. Kate tells Angel that she has a fear of public speaking. She greets her father and introduces Angel. Kate begins her speech by praising her father’s years of service, but then reveals much about their private lives. She begins to cry, telling everyone her father never told her she was pretty. This sparks an outpouring of emotions from the crowd and fights begin to break out.
Angel takes Kate to his office. Cordelia arrives, to find Angel and Doyle babysitting Kate who is babbling about Angel’s intense eyes. Angel asks Kate about the sensitivity training and she shows him the memo. Angel goes to Lloyd’s home. He discovers the talking stick being used in some type of magic but Allen attacks Angel with the stick.
At the station officers are releasing prisoners because of the effects of the stick. Kate escapes from Angel’s office and searches for her father. Angel rushes to the station where Cordelia and Doyle have followed Kate. Angel pulls his friends into a hug, then he becomes emotional as he admits he threatened Lloyd with violence. Lloyd explained that Tony hired him to neutralise the police so he could kill Kate. Angel feels that Cordelia and Doyle judge him when he becomes a vampire.
Cordelia and Doyle force Angel to break into the station basement. Tony goes after Kate with a gun, but Angel arrives and tries to talk Tony out of confrontation. Finally Angel knocks Tony out. Lee Mercer tells Tony that he’s become a risk and they refuse to represent him. Angel checks on Kate and everything seems to be back to normal. She tells Angel that they suspect the drinks at the party were spiked. Kate’s father tells her she embarrassed him at the party and she’s never to mention the incident again.
