Season 3, Episode 14
"Bad Girls "
Wesley was born and raised in England by his loving mother and domineering father. When old enough, he was sent to the Watchers Council and trained to become a future Watcher. When the Council fired Rupert Giles at the beginning of 1999, Wesley travelled to Sunnydale, California to take over as Buffy and Faith’s Watcher. Wesley resented the fact that Buffy would only listen to Giles, and Faith had no time for him what-so-ever. Upon arrival in Sunnydale, a strong attraction developed between Wesley and Cordelia, but after disastrous results, it was decided they were better off as friends.
Originally scripted to be in only 3 episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Wesley’s annoying nuances were genuinely funny and he stayed until the end of Buffy’s third season. He disappeared for a while before showing up in Los Angeles where he soon encountered Angel. Wesley informed Angel that he had been sacked from the Watchers Council and was now a rogue demon hunter, a title that lasted all of about 5 minutes. Angel soon hired the former Watcher who now filled the void left by the death of the much-loved Doyle.
Although Wesley still has his little annoying nuances, he can be comedic one minute and dead serious the next. He’s good at researching demons and finding explanations for things, and he often keeps Angel and Cordelia grounded by pointing out home truths and uncovering earth-grounding information. When we first saw Wesley back in 1999, one look from a demon would send him ducking for cover or running and "screaming like a girl". But now, he fights alongside Angel, usually without question.
Wesley is a character that you either love or hate or both. He’s a very smart man who is also funny, and he takes Cordelia’s personal insults and snide remarks on the chin. Those two characters can barely go five minutes before the name-calling starts, but it’s all in good humour. There is a dark side to Wesley that hasn’t really been explored yet. Although very little has been revealed about Wesley in his pre-Watcher’s Council days, we have been led to believe that Wesley suffered some kind of abuse at the hands of his overbearing father. But, as yet, this avenue has not yet been explored. A very good darts player, and a rather interesting dancer, Wesley’s bumbling way is, at times, a breath of fresh air in the otherwise serious and dark storylines.
